The Simiyu Climate Resilience Project (SCRP) is financed by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the German Government through KfW as well as the Government of Tanzania. The Ministry of Water (MoW) acts as the Project Executing Agency (PEA) and, steering and monitoring the project. The total budget is EUR 171 million as a grant, to be implemented until August 9, 2025. The project aims at increasing the climate resilience of rural and urban households in the Simiyu by improving water supply, sanitation, and agriculture and at improving policies and regulations for cross-sectoral action towards climate adaptation. The aim is to improve the supply of drinking water for three urban settlements (Nyashimo, Bariadi, and Lagangabilili) and additionally for 50% of the rural population living in a 24-km wide corridor of land (12 km on both sides of the main pipeline) in Busega, Bariadi and Itilima districts. The envisaged investments include a bulk water supply system with a pump station, water treatment plant, main transmission pipeline, one command reservoir, and 5 primary reservoirs. Additionally, an urban water supply system comprising 6,000 private taps, 4,000 house connections, and 70 public taps. Also, a rural water supply system comprising pipelines to selected villages where more than 200 public standpipes will be installed. The bulk water supply system will be operated and maintained by a newly established public utility. The existing urban water supply and sanitation authority (WSSA) in Bariadi and two newly formed urban WSSAs in Nyashimo and Lagangabilili will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the urban water supply systems. The operation and maintenance of the rural water supply system will be the responsibility of 6 or 8 newly formed Community-based Water Supply Organisations (CbWSOs).

SCRP will be implemented over 4 years (July 2021 – August 2025).
